Motivations behind Morocco Request for TCP project on post-harvest losses Mohamed Boughlala INRA-Morocco The Near East and North Africa Region Regional Multi-stakeholder Food Security and Nutrition Workshop Amman, Jordan, April 28-29, 2015 Population structure • Total population: 33.76 million • Rural Population: 13,41 million (39.7%) • Widespread poverty: among every 10 poor Men, 7 are living in rural area; Moroccan Agriculture • Total area of Morocco ~ 71 million ha: • 13 % (9.2 million ha) of arable land (17% irrigated & 83% rainfed); • • • • 44 % (31 million ha) of non productive land; 30 % (21 million ha) of pasture; 8 % (5.8 million ha) of forest; 5 % (3 million ha) of native alfalfa. Annual consumption of cereals is currently around 320 kg per capita. • Cereals account for 25% of food expenditures; • Grain and straw represent 40% of total forage units requirements. Importance of cereal crops • Total area of cereals is estimated between 5 and 5.5 million hectares. • Average annual production is about 6 million tones and in average it covers only 40% of the demand of cereals in Morocco. Economic role of cereals • Represents 40% of work opportunities in crop production sector • 30% of the agricultural GDP • 45% of total food imports • Influence overall economic activity of the country Green Morocco Plan A strategy to achieve sustainable growth in agriculture and food security Problematic • Post harvest losses for cereals, fruits and vegetables in Morocco are very high and rough estimates are evaluated between 20 and 40%. • Studies on the estimates of post harvest losses and food waste in Morocco are insufficient, fragmented and imprecise. Objectives of the study • Identify post harvest losses for mean agricultural product • Better understand the causes of these losses • Propose a guidelines for an action program for the reduction of these losses THANK YOU
