Proposal Summary
This project is imperative for the University of Alaska Fairbanks and its students to increase access to
eating locally. Growing supplemental produce in the Facilities Greenhouse provides three main services
to students and the university at large: it would help lower our carbon footprint- adding to the awareness
of our universities sustainability desires, it would lower the energy costs of the Facilities Services
Greenhouse by utilizing new lower cost technology, and it would strengthen students awareness of LED
technology in conjunction with solar panels.

Budget Detail
Equipment and supplies:
3- 210 Watt Solar Panels (PV) -$750-900 ea.
1- Solar power inverter -$500-800
Solar Panel Installation fixtures/mounts -$120 ea.
LED fixtures ~$100
7- 300 Watt Red/Blue LED light panels
-$4200
Project Total for materials = $7410- 8160
*Prices do not consider labor and installation costs or shipping.
Budget Justification
-Photovoltaic Solar Panels would displace much of the energy needed to run the greenhouse.
-A power inverter is necessary to run any Solar Powered system
-Solar Panel mounts are important to make sure the panels are getting the most out of the day's light. It
would be ideal to have adjustable tilt mounts.
-Fixtures are necessary to bring the LED lamps close to the plants to provide them with lights.
-LED lamps are much more efficient at power use than traditionally used high pressure sodium lights.
-Again, these costs do not include shipping estimates or labor costs.
Project Value
This project would significantly decrease the amount of electricity used at the Facilities Services
Greenhouse. LED lighting is a new technology our school can use to promote energy efficiency and grow
fresh produce for the Lola Tilly Commons. It is difficult for students who live on campus to get fresh local
produce in their diet. By supplementing this supply on campus we can encourage expansion of local food
in our diet.
Implementation Plan
The project would start once the solar panels and LED lamps were ordered, ideally around the middle of
December. Due to the lack of light in the middle of the winter, actual plant propagation would wait until
late January or February.

I, Nina Schwinghammer Gardening Sustainability Coordinator, would be responsible for overseeing and
implementation of the project.
Qualifications & Experience
I have the leadership and communication skills necessary to facilitate and work with the staff of Facilities
Services. I am passionate about food systems and efficiency on campus and it’s a goal of mine to provide
fresh produce to fellow students. I’m currently Co-President of Sustainable Campus Task Force as well as
the Gardening Sustainability Coordinator on Campus, thereby making it my job as an employee to see
this project to its completion. I took a class in Greenhouse Production from Dr. Meriam Karlsson in 2008
to learn about propagation and lighting in a producing greenhouse.
