Lab Quiz #2 Information – Biology 212
This lab quiz will primarily focus on only visual recognition of the structures from Lab 5: Digestion and Lab 6:
Circulation. Details noted below. It may also contain anything that was covered for Lab 3/4 Animal Diversity
Lab (see study information for Lab Quiz #1).
Note that for the Lab Practicum (on March 6) you will also need to know the functions of the structures.
Types of questions:
You will be shown a picture of an organism or a slide and asked:
• What is the name of this structure?
• For slides, what is the specimen name? (species or genera as listed)
• What phylum (or other taxa as specified) does this specimen belong to?
Structures to be able to identify
Microscope Slides
o Grantia (c.s. and l.s.)—Identify the ostia (pores), spongocoel
o Hydra (c.s.)—Identify gastrodermis, epidermis, gastrovascular cavity
o Planaria (c.s. and l.s.)—Identify the gastrovascular cavity intestine; pharynx, pharyngeal cavity
o Earthworm (c.s.)—Identify the intestine, typhlosole (functions to increase surface area of the
intestine), and the coelom (look for mesodermal layers), epidermis
o Human Artery-Vein - Locate the artery (thick walled very circular) and the vein (thinner walled, not
circular)
o Amphibian Heart - Amphibians have a 3-chambered heart. Identify the large single ventricle and
the two atria (one will be noticeably larger than the other due to the angle of the cut). Are any
blood vessels visible?
Models:
o Earthworm model: Identify mouth, pharynx, esophagus, crop, gizzard, and intestine, 5 aortic arches
(hearts), dorsal blood vessel and ventral blood vessel.
o Mussel Heart (plastimount) Locate the heart, which pumps the circulatory fluid into the body cavity
to bathe the organs directly. Also note the gills, mouth, foot & mantle.
Rat
External Anatomy: mouth, incisors, anus
Internal Anatomy: coelom, liver, esophagus, stomach, spleen (not-digestive), pancreas, small intestine (specific
area of duodenum as well as entire small intestine), mesentery, caecum, large intestine, rectum
Heart, arteries and veins: right and left atria, right and left ventricles, renal artery and renal vein
Pigeon
External anatomy: beak, vent
Internal Anatomy: esophagus, crop, stomach, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, cecum, rectum
No circulatory system for pigeon on Lab Quiz #2
Mammlian Heart
External Structures: pericardium, R & L atria, R & L ventricles, aorta, pulmonary artery, vena cava, pulmonary
veins, coronary artery
Internal Structures: R & L atria, R & L ventricles, pulmonary semilunar valve, aortic semilunar valve, tricuspid
valve (right atrioventricular valve), chordae tendineae, bicuspid or mitral valve (left atrioventricular valve)
