Engineering Technology… Team member: 1) Ayra Umayrah 2) Ahlam Awateef 3) Waseem Akram 4) Ameerul Ahwaz 4 MODEM THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY o The sun is another main source of energy on earth. o It is believed that the sun temperature is about 15 million Kelvin. o SOLAR RADIATION The released energy makes its way to the sun’s surface (photosphere) and then to outer space in the form of electromagnetic radiation (electric wave and magnetic field). o Electricity is generated when solar radiation is directed to a voltaic photocell. o The electrical energy is limited and small in quantity depending on the amount of radiation. o Electricity cannot be obtained in the dark. o Solar energy is used, e.g , in calculators and watches. o Bigger electricity generation systems that use solar panels to collect heat by heating liquid in the panel tubes. o Liquid will turn into high pressure steam. o The steam is then conveyed to the turbine to turn the generator, thus generating electricity. o Batteries are installed into the system to retain the electrical energy when there is no solar (at night). o Batteries are only functional in the absence of the sun. o All the control processes are made automatic. o Usually, solar panel are installed on rooftops. o Solar energy can also be used to supply hot water in a building. o Hot water produced is collected in a special tank and is released when required. ELECTRICAL POWER STATION TYPE OF STATION SOLAR LOCATION ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES • Any place where there is sunlight. • Very appropriate for remote areas. • Free source of energy. • Energy is renewable. • No pollution. • Equipment to convert energy is expensive. • Energy depends on the sunlight.
