Spelling Activities 1. Rainbow Words First write each word in pencil. Then trace over each word three times. Each time you trace, you must use a DIFFERENT color crayon. Trace neatly and you will see a rainbow! 2. Silly Sentences Write 8 silly sentences using a spelling word in each sentence. Please underline your spelling words! Write neatly! Example: My dog wears a blue and purple dress when he takes a bath. 3. Backward Words Write your spelling words forwards and then backwards. Write neatly! Example: where erehw 4. Squiggly Words You are going to write your spelling words two times. First write in regular letters. Then write the words again in letters! squiggly 5. Pyramid Words “Pyramid write” your spelling words. You must write neatly! *Example: Home H Ho Hom Home 6. ABC Order Write them in ABC order. 7. Z-A Write your spelling in backwards ABC order. with Z and work to A. Start 8. Write a Story Write a story using your spelling words. Be sure to underline your spelling words in your paragraph. 9. Blue Vowels Write each of your spelling words. You will need a blue colored pencil. Trace over the vowels in each word with your blue colored pencil. Vowels = a e i o u 10. Bubble Letters Write your spelling words in bubble letters. After you write your words in bubble letters, color your words with a crayon or colored pencil. 14. Square Your Vowels Write each of your spelling words. Then go back and put a square around all of the vowels in your spelling words! 11. Three Times Each Write each spelling word three times. First, write each word in pencil. Second write each word in crayon. Third, write each word in marker. You MUST write neatly! Or you can just write the words 3 times each 15. Spelling Syllable Break Write each spelling word but leave enough room between the syllables of the word to add a / mark. E.g. syll/a/bles 12. Adding my words Each letter has a value. *Consonants are worth 10. *Vowels are worth 5. Write your spelling words. Then add up the value of each spelling word. Examplesaid- 10 + 5 + 5 + 10 = 30 Cut out letters from old magazines/ catalogs/ newspapers and glue them on paper to form each spelling words. 13. Consonant Circle Write each of your spelling words. Then go back and circle all of the consonants in your words! Don’t forget to write neatly! 16. Word Collage 17. Add – on Alliteration Create tongue twisters with your spelling words. If you have two or more words on your list that begin with the same sound, you may combine them into one sentence. E.g. basement and basket (my spelling words) The big basket in Barney’s basement was bought by Betty. 18. Word Chains Using grid paper, write words in crossword/ Scrabble style. Start with the longest word. 19. Mystery Words Write a clue for each word. Show your spelling list to a parent and have him/her guess the words. Write down the correct answers. 20. Visual Spelling Draw a sketch for each spelling word and incorporate the written spelling word into the picture. 21. Puzzle Using grid paper, make a word search using your words. Highlight your words within the puzzle. 22. Speech Sort Sort your spelling words according to their part of speech. If a word can be more than one part of speech, add it to each category. Categories include: Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, and Preposition 23. Word Fractions Make spelling fractions by writing each spelling word. Beside the word, write 2 fractions (vowels first and consonants second). To figure out the fractions, write the total number of letters as the denominator. The numerator is the number os vowels or consonants. Example: school 2/6 (vowels) 4/6 (consonants) 24. Mini-Words Write each spelling word. Beside the word, write two words (at least four letters long) that could be spelled using the letters from this word. Example: multiplication = clip mail 25. Grid Spelling Using grid paper, write your spelling words by placing a letter in each box. At the top of your paper start with the spelling word that has the fewest letters and work towards the bottom with the word that has the most letters. If words have the same number of letters, alphabetize them to determine their order. 26. Acronym Spelling Write your spelling words vertically. Then make each letter a new word. E.g. debt Debbie eats buttered toast 27. Spelling Speech Select 5 of your 10 spelling words. Write at least a 4 sentence speech about each of the words. E.g. pencil - This word has two syllables. - This word has six letters. - This word has two vowels. - This word begins and ends with a consonant. 28. All Sorts of Spelling Sorts Choose a type of sort and write your spelling words under the correct category. Sort types: Starts with a consonant vs. vowel Ends with a vowel vs. a consonant Long vowel sounds vs. short vowel sound Number of syllables (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) Number of letters (3, 4, 5, 6, etc.) Singular vs. Plural Prefix vs. Suffix vs. No affixes 29. Spelling Thesaurus (Antonym Style) Make a list of your spelling words and beside each word write its antonym. E.g. Spelling word Antonym gigantic tiny 30.
