Hawaii Standard(s) addressed: Standard 14: Data Analysis, Statistics
and Probability: Probability: Understand and apply basic notions of chance
and probability
Benchmark MA.7.14.1: Relate theoretical probability to experimental results
I can (Benchmark restated): I can us theoretical probability to make an
educated guess about the results of an experiment.
Create a game box for puhenehene.
Time
Two 45 minute class periods – 1 day for exploring websites and 1 day for
Recommended: completing product (Note: product could be completed by hand rather than
on the computer)
Materials
Materials - cereal box or similar (optional), colored pens, paper, glue
needed:
Materials if playing the game – a blanket and pebble for every two teams
Printing – 2 pages – front and back of game box
Downloads- need Real Player for video in step 4
Equipment (beside computer) – printer
Vocabulary:
Event –Hanana
Hawaiian
Probability - Pahiki
vocabulary:
Experimental Probability – Pahiki Ho`okolohua
Theoretical Probability – Pahiki Kuhiakau
Options:
 Have student bring in a cereal box or similar to use as their game box.
 Just have students create PowerPoint slides that represent the front
and the back of the game box without attaching to an actual box.
 Have students play the game to compare theoretical results to
experimental results – this could be done in class or at home
 Do a simulation - Student could use a spinner to simulate the game
by choosing a color, spinning the spinner, awarding a point if guessed
correctly
Tips
• Homework – game box could be created by hand outside of class
• Homework – Reflection and Feedback sections could be assigned as
homework
Other
• 6.14.1 – Jun Ken Po, What should I show? – Compute probabilities
