These practices rest on important ‘processes and proficiencies’ with longstanding importance in mathematics education.” (CCSS, 2010) SMP • Which of the Standards for Mathematical Practice can you identify? • How have you begun implementing these in your classroom instruction? Standards for (Student) Mathematical Practice 1. Make sense of complex problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision. 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Models for SMP Connections to Literacy Activity Quote: “It is suggested that we shift the emphasis from teaching to learning, from our experience to the children's, in fact, from our world to their world.” Zoltan Dienes 9 Coordinate Algebra is the first in a sequence of three high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of algebra with correlated statistics applications and a bridge to the second course through coordinate geometric topics.
