Numbers and Operations
The Number System (8.NS)
M8N1. Students will understand different
representations of numbers including
square roots, exponents, and scientific
notation.
Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and
approximate them by rational numbers.
h. Distinguish between rational and
irrational numbers.
1. Know that numbers that are not rational are called
irrational.
Understand informally that every number has a
decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that
the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and
convert a decimal expansion which repeats
eventually into a rational number.
2. Use rational approximations of irrational numbers
to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate
them approximately on a number line diagram, and
estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π2). For
example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2,
show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4
and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better
approximations.

The Complex Number System
(MCC9-12.N.CN)
MM2N1.
a. Write square roots of negative
numbers in imaginary form.
b. Write complex numbers in the form
a + bi.
c. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide
complex numbers.
d. Simplify expressions involving
complex numbers.
1. Know there is a complex number i such
that i2 = −1, and every complex number
has the form a + bi with a and b real.
2. Use the relation i2 = –1 and the
commutative, associative, and
distributive properties to add, subtract,
and multiply complex numbers.
3. (+) Find the conjugate of a complex
number; use conjugates to find moduli
and quotients of complex numbers.

CCGPS Math Practices
“The Standards for Mathematical Practice
describe varieties of expertise that mathematics
educators at all levels should seek to develop in
their students. These practices rest on
important ‘processes and proficiencies’ with
longstanding importance in mathematics
education.”
(CCSS, 2010)
(Student)
1. Make sense of complex problems and persevere in solving
them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of
others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
