The student will be able to find definitions for the vocabulary terms listed, and
understand why learning these words are important as an introductory activity for Chapter 10.
• Citizenship- The way you conduct
yourself as a member of the community
• Role- A part you play in a relationship
• Communication- The way in which you
send messages to and receive messages
from others
• Compromise- A problem-solving method
that involves each participant’s giving up
something to reach a solution that satisfies
everyone
• “I” Message- A statement where a person
describes how they feel using the pronoun
“I”
• Active Listening- Paying close attention to
what someone says and communicating.
• Mediation- Process where specially trained
people help others resolve conflict peacefully
• Body Language- Nonverbal communication
through gestures, facial expressions,
behaviors, and posture
• Prejudice- An unfair opinion or judgement of a
particular group of people.
• Tolerance-The ability to accept others’
differences and allow them to be who they are
without expressing disapproval.
• Conflict- Any disagreement, struggle, or
fight.
• Negotiation- The use of communication
and often compromise to settle a
disagreement.
• Confidentiality- Respecting the privacy of
another and keeping details secret
• Peer Mediators- Students trained to help
other students find fair resolutions to
conflicts and disagreements.
