Ancient China The Geography of China’s River Valleys (Ch. 8 Sec 1 and Section 2) Key Terms • Define: loess, dike, oracle bones The Dragon Dragons brought good luck and made the soil fertile. Rivers were described as dragons Climate of Ancient China • North China Plain: Made up of soil from Huang River *Climate is dry • South China *Warm and wet Effects on Civilization • Mountains and seas separated China from other lands *They had little knowledge about other civilizations *Thought they lived in the center of the world and called themselves the Middle Kingdom • Rivers overflowed bringing fresh soil *Civilization began along the rivers Yellow River • 2nd largest in China • Called Huang- which means yellow due to the loess • Along the river a grain called millet grows • Known as China’s sorrow due to destructive floods • To help control the flooding, dikes were built but eventually the tiver rose above them. Early Chinese Civilization • The Shang Dynasty: 1st civilization in China, 1760 BC *Built 1st cities and 1st Chinese alphabet *Famous for bronze work • The Zhou Dynasty: lived in the Wei Valley about 600 years after the Shang people emerged *Zhou conquered the Shang in 1122 BC and split into Eastern and Western *Conquered later by the Qin (chin) • Mandate of Heaven: rulers came to power because it was their destiny Importance of Family • Center of Chinese society; most important • Traditional families: usually extended family *Many generations loved together often in 1 room • Family Authority *Oldest male was the authority figure: decided who his children and grandchildren would marry and punished disrespectful children *After the oldest males passed- it was divided among sons • Women’s Roles: considered lower status *3 obediences: obey fathers in youth, husbands in marriage, and sons as a widow *4 Virtues: morality, modesty, proper speech, domestic skills • Family Names: Inherited and personal name *inherited name: passed from father to child (Like a last name) *personal name: like a first name Difference: family name comes first Section handout Writing Activity- p. 257 Ancient China- ppt Convert PowerPoint to flash for web sharing.
