The U.S. and Vietnam • Vietnam was a French colony that had been captured by Japan during World War II. • When the war was over and Japan was defeated, the Vietnamese looked forward to independence. • But the French were not prepared to give up the colony. • Vietnamese forces, led by Communist Ho Chi Minh fought against the French for Vietnam’s independence.
