At what point does it become unacceptable? Imperialism Introduction Focus Question Was it acceptable for the United States to look after itself to the point that Hawaii’s freedom was compromised? Explain American Imperialism Prior to the late 1800’s the United States did not show any interest in foreign lands. They were occupied with several domestic issues. Imperialism:1890 - 1920 Annexing Hawaii 1891- Queen Liliuokalani tried to limit the U.S. influence in Hawaii. Imperialism:1890 - 1920 Annexing Hawaii • However, Queen Liliokalani was not successful. • 1893 - U.S. business interests created a “Hawaiian revolution.” • President Cleveland opposed annexing the island for humanitarian reasons, but McKinley annexed the area in 1898.
