U.S. Territory Expansion Civil War (1861 – 1865) • Battle over slavery, states rights, new territory and presidential politics. • It was heavily concentrated in the southern U.S. because of the numbers of plantations – need for laborers (sugar, cotton) • Harsh measures to control slaves and keep them from deserting. • The 13th Amendment ended slavery in the United States in 1865, Slavery The World Wars World War I – 1914-1918 World War II – 1939-1945 • During the 20th Century, the United States tried to stay out of the European wars, but were dragged into both. – World War I – with the sinking of the Lusitania by German U-boats. – World War II – with the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, HI by the Japanese. • After World War II, the U.S. became one of the largest superpowers in the world and remains one today. September 11, 2001 • On the morning of September 11th, 2001, four planes were hijacked. Two crashed into the Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon, and one was brought down in Pennsylvania. • 19 hijackers affiliated with Al-Qaeda killed around 2,998 people, mostly civilians.
