The Human Body After today, you will be able to answer: What are we made of? How are we organized? Study of the Human Body • Called anatomy and physiology • Anatomy- study of the shape of an organism and its parts – Ex: What are the size and shape of our lungs? • Physiology – study of the function of an organism and its parts – Ex: What do our lungs do for our bodies? Remember! • What are all living organisms made of? Cells!!!! Levels of organization • We are living organisms and are also made out of cells LEVELS EXAMPLE • A group of cells make a tissue cardiac tissue Levels of organization • We are living organisms and are also made out of cells LEVELS EXAMPLE • A group of cells make a tissue cardiac tissue • A group of tissues make an organ heart Levels of organization • We are living organisms and are also made out of cells LEVELS EXAMPLE • A group of cells make a tissue cardiac tissue • A group of tissues make an organ • A group of organs make a system heart circulatory system Levels of organization • We are living organisms and are also made out of cells LEVELS EXAMPLE • A group of cells make a tissue cardiac tissue • A group of tissues make an organ heart • A group of organs make a system circulatory system • A group of systems make an organism human Organ Systems • There are 11 main organ systems in the human body… • Which ones can you name? Organ systems • • • • • • • • • • • Nervous Skeletal Muscular Circulatory Digestive Respiratory Integumentary (Skin) Excretory (Waste) Endocrine (Hormones) Reproductive Immune (fights disease) All of these systems work together to help you function!! Organ systems • • • • • • • • • • • Nervous Skeletal Muscular Circulatory Digestive Respiratory Integumentary (Skin) Excretory (Waste) Endocrine (Hormones) Reproductive Immune (fights disease) Nervous system • Responsible for process information from the environment – Senses: taste, see, touch, etc. • Also to send messages from the brain to other organs – Controls movement and function – Ex: tells your lungs to inhale and keeps your heart beating • Made of special cells- neurons Skeletal system • Gives your body shape and structure • Protects internal organs – Ex: rib cage and heart • Attaches to muscular system – to help with movement • Made of bones, ligaments and tendons Muscular System • Provides movement • Attached to skeletal system • Two types of muscles: • Voluntary – Ex: you kick your leg • Involuntary – Ex: your heart beating – Ex: Your stomach moving food Circulatory System • Moves blood through the body • Transports oxygen from lungs to other organs • Made of heart, arteries, capillaries and veins • Arteries- blood flows away from heart • Veins- blood flows to the heart Digestive System • Breaks down food to chemicals that our body can use • Starts with the mouth! – Ex: chewing and digesting • This provides energy for your body!
