Answer to Final Jeopardy
• The fate of African Americans was very closely tied to the Civil War.
One of the key reasons the South seceded was because it feared
that the North would try to end slavery. In this way, from the
beginning the war was linked with slavery. As the war went on,
Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Though this did not
immediately free any slaves, it paved the way for the end of slavery.
The Emancipation Proclamation also changed the nature of the war,
turning it into a war to stop slavery. This gave African Americans an
enormous stake in the war. During the war, the Union accepted
African Americans into the army. Although they faced discrimination,
African Americans distinguished themselves on the battlefield. It
would be many years before African Americans would fully enjoy all
the rights that other Americans took for granted, but the Civil War
ultimately led to the end of slavery in the United States and brought
about circumstances in which African Americans could begin a long
struggle to gain full equality.
