Let’s Break It Down Define Civil- between citizen Civil War = War between citizens/regions of a country The Civil War lasted 4 years- from 1861 to 1865 What was so awful about the Civil War? Why? More Americans lost their lives in this war than any other war we’ve fought combined…because…. We were fighting each other- every death was American- 600,000 In This Corner… North/Union/Yankees South/Confederate / Rebels 1. Wanted a strong federal government (DC- President, Congress, Supreme Court) Wanted a strong state government (Governors, mayors) 2. Wanted to preserve the Union Wanted their independence 3. Did not want slavery to spread to new stateswanted free states out West Wanted slavery to spread to new states (slave states) Math Time Most Southerners did NOT own slaves. Only 25% owned slaves (1:4). How does this fit with the perception of the South? Reasons For… The South relies on slavery- to grow all crops (rice, sugar, cotton, tobacco, wheat, etc) South sold/exported goods to Europe for trade (make $) and it was used in the North for the factories (cotton makes clothes) South claimed the nation relied on them and that slavery was necessary for the US to succeed What’s the Difference? South- used slave labor (not paid), agricultural- cotton, sugar, plantations, white landowners North- less rural (more urban), free laborpaid, more jobs, more people immigrants, industrial, cities, railroads, make textiles, compete w/ Europe Aba- what? An ABOLITIONIST is a person who believed that slavery was WRONG and should end (if you ABOLISH something you get rid of it) Many Northerners were abolitionists and they were mostly REPUBLICAN So Scared… Southerners were afraid that the North wanted to abolish slavery- hurting their economy and lifestyle The South fought for strong STATES rights because they didn’t want the North to have power in their part of the country Therefore, most Southerners voted DEMOCRAT The SPARK What event changed the relationship between the N & S? The election of Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency in 1860 changed the interactions because he was a Republican and most Republicans wanted to stop the spread of slavery and even end it. However, Lincoln clearly stated many times his #1 goal was to preserve the Union Effects of the Election What did the South do as a result of Lincoln’s election? They broke away (secede) from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America VOCAB: Secede- to break away What states seceded? VA, NC, SC**, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX, AR, TN First Shots Fired The Civil War officially began on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter, South Carolina when the Rebel Army attacked and forced the Yanks to surrender Let’s Fight! What is the difference between an offensive and defensive war? Which side did each fight? Offensive is when people are on the attack and trying to take over an area. Defensive is when people are protecting and defending their land (this is kind of like a home field advantage). The North was fighting an offensive war and the South was fighting a defensive war. Against All Odds? What advantages did the North and the South have? Who do you think would win just based upon this? South- military experience, home field advantage North- industries/supplies, rxr, more men
