the Civil War so high?
Let’s Break It Down



Define Civil- between
citizen
Civil War = War between
citizens/regions of a country
The Civil War lasted 4
years- from 1861 to 1865
What was so awful about
the Civil War? Why?
More Americans lost their
lives in this war than any
other war we’ve fought
combined…because….
We were fighting each
other- every death was
American- 600,000
In This Corner…

Math Time


Most Southerners did NOT own slaves.
Only 25% owned slaves (1:4).
How does this fit with the perception
of the South?
Reasons For…



The South relies on slavery- to grow all
crops (rice, sugar, cotton, tobacco, wheat,
etc)
South sold/exported goods to Europe for
trade (make $) and it was used in the North
for the factories (cotton makes clothes)
South claimed the nation relied on them and
that slavery was necessary for the US to
succeed
What’s the Difference?

South- used slave
labor (not paid),
agricultural- cotton,
sugar, plantations,
white landowners

North- less rural (more
urban), free laborpaid, more jobs, more
people immigrants,
industrial, cities,
railroads, make
textiles, compete w/
Europe
Aba- what?


An ABOLITIONIST is a person who
believed that slavery was WRONG and
should end (if you ABOLISH something
you get rid of it)
Many Northerners were abolitionists
and they were mostly REPUBLICAN
So Scared…



Southerners were afraid that the North
wanted to abolish slavery- hurting their
economy and lifestyle
The South fought for strong STATES rights
because they didn’t want the North to have
power in their part of the country
Therefore, most Southerners voted
DEMOCRAT
The SPARK



What event changed the relationship
between the N & S?
The election of Abraham Lincoln to the
Presidency in 1860 changed the interactions
because he was a Republican and most
Republicans wanted to stop the spread of
slavery and even end it.
However, Lincoln clearly stated many times
his #1 goal was to preserve the Union
Effects of the Election





What did the South do as a result of
Lincoln’s election?
They broke away (secede) from the Union
and formed the Confederate States of
America
VOCAB: Secede- to break away
What states seceded?
VA, NC, SC**, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX, AR,
TN
First Shots Fired

The Civil War officially began on April
12, 1861 at Fort Sumter, South
Carolina when the Rebel Army
attacked and forced the Yanks to
surrender
Let’s Fight!


What is the difference between an
offensive and defensive war? Which side
did each fight?
Offensive is when people are on the
attack and trying to take over an
area. Defensive is when people are
protecting and defending their land
(this is kind of like a home field
advantage). The North was fighting
an offensive war and the South was
fighting a defensive war.
Against All Odds?



What advantages did the North and
the South have? Who do you think
would win just based upon this?
South- military experience, home field
advantage
North- industries/supplies, rxr, more
men
