The Battle of Antietam…
Where: Sharpsburg, Maryland near a stream called
Antietam Creek
When: September 17, 1862
Who: Commander of CSA = Robert E. Lee
Commander of USA = George McClellan
What happened:
Single bloodiest day of battle in the Civil War (and in US
History).
12 hour battle
23,000 casualties (killed, wounded, missing)
Union victory
After long list of Confederate victories, the Union win at
Antietam gives President Lincoln the confidence to issue the
Emancipation Proclamation.
Emancipation Proclamation
CHANGES THE PURPOSE OF THE WAR!
~From keeping the Union together to keeping the
Union together AND freeing slaves in rebel states.
~Declares that all slaves “living in states in
rebellion” will get their freedom on Jan 1, 1863.
~A 100 day “grace period” will be given to “states
in rebellion” so that they can make up their mind if
they want to come back into the Union of not.
~If a “state in rebellion” comes back to the Union
within 100 days, it does not have to free its’
slaves! (The Confederate states choice to fight.)
~After the President Lincoln issues this
proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, France and
England(2 anti-slavery countries) had not choice
but to “back” the North and not the South.
Now on to
the Battle of Gettysburg
1.) Where: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (UNION)
2.) When: July 1-3, 1863
3.) Commander of CSA: Robert E. Lee
4.) Strength: 75,000 men
5.) What did Lee hope to accomplish:
Get much-needed shoes, food, ammunition, and rest for his
men.
Eventually, make his way towards Washington, D.C.
Bring war to the North and make them loose will to fight.
6.) Commander of USA: Gen. George Meade
7.) Strength: 82,289 men
8.) What did Meade hope to accomplish?
Keep Lee out of the North
Drive south towards Richmond (capital of Confederacy)
9.) Total Casualties: 51,112 (Union 23,048; Confederacy
28,064)
10.) Who won: Union
11.) 3 outcomes:
~Bloodiest battle of the Civil War w/ 51,000 casualties
~Ended Lee’s 2nd attempt to invade the North and get
much-needed supplies.
~ Lee will never press that far north again.
The Battle of Chickamauga
1.) Where: Georgia (CONFEDERATE)
2.) When: Sept. 19-20, 1863
3.) Commander of CSA: Braxton Bragg
4.) Strength: 66,326 men
5.) What did Bragg hope to accomplish:
Take over control of Chattanooga, TN. and the major railway
lines leading into GA
Keep Rosecrans out of Georgia
6.) Commander of USA: William Rosecrans
7.) Strength: 41,400 men
8.) What did Rosecrans hope to accomplish?
Keep control of Chattanooga, TN. and the major railway lines
leading into GA
Drive Bragg South into Georgia
