GEOMETRY VOCABULARY
1. POINT: - A position or location in space
1. Symbol . = Point A
2. LINE: - A collection of points on a straight path extending in both directions
forever
- Symbol ↔ = line AB
3. LINE SEGMENT: - point of a line with 2 end points
Symbol ─ line = segment AB
4. RAY: A line that has one end point and extend on the other end
Symbol → = ray AB
5. VERTEX: - Point were 2 or more sides or edges meet.
- is the middle letter in an angle
6. PROTRACTOR: - The tool that is used to measure angles
7. MEASURE: - Symbol is M
8. DEGREE: - Basic unit of measurement of an angle
1. Symbol º
9. ANGLE: - Formed when 2 edges or sides meet. A vertex(common end part)
1. Symbol – SEE BELOW
10. ARC: Part of a circle ( curved between two end points)
Arc ABC of a circle
11. PARALLEL: - Lines or the same plane with no common points
which never intersect
and are the same distance apart
Symbol – SEE BELOW
12. PERPENDICULAR: - When two edges meet at 90° ( right angle)
Symbol – SEE BELOW
13. CONGRUENT: - The same/EQUAL
Symbol – SEE BELOW
14. SIMILAR: -Same shape but usually a different size ( Proportional)
15. POLYGON: - Shape made with at least 3 straight lines ( closed)
16. ALTITUDE: - Height, use set square to mark altitude 90º
- Altitude can be inside the triangle or outside
17. NAME OF TRIANGLE ACCORDING TO SIDES:
 EQUALATERAL - All sides equal
 ISOSCELES – Two sides the same
 SCALENE – None the same
18. NAME OF TRIANGLES ACCORDING TO ANGLES
 RIGHT ANGLE – one angle has 90°
 OBTUSE ANGLE TRIANGEL- One angle more that 90° but
less than 180°
 ACUTE ANGLE TRIANGEL –all 3 angles are acute
