remain at Fredericksburg (lots of fires).
• It started on 05/01/1863, Hooker went into the woods,

right…rabbits and deers..oh my!
• Jackson will be accidentally shot and Hooker will
retreat back across the river.
CONFEDERATE VICTORY
Battle of Gettysburg
• Late June, 1863 Lee heads north to Pennsylvania to get
more supplies. He knows that one big win in the north
could end the war.
• It turns out to be his last advance into the north- the
turning point of the war…
• July 1st: Troops (both sides) showed up and headed to
the hills…stretching 4 miles. General Meade is in
command of the Union. Cemetery Ridge was in the
middle of the Northern line and Seminary Ridge was in
the middle of the Southern line…between the two was a
large field, several hundred yards long.
• July 2nd: Longstreet didn’t get going till 4:00 p.m.
giving Meade time for reinforcements. South tried taking
the hill but were forced to retreat.
Battle of Gettysburg
(Cont.)
• July 3rd: It started with an artillery barrage by both
sides. Then 15,000 Confederate troops (mile long, 3
rows) moved towards Cemetery Ridge…Pickett’s
Charge! Only a few hundred made it to the line. It
was all over in 30 minutes with a Confederate retreat
back to their hill.
• This was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War…Union
(23,000) and the Confederates (28,000).
• The Confederates made their retreat back to Virginia
the very next day.
UNION VICTORY
SEMINARY RIDGE
Gettysburg Address

• 15,000 folks came to hear Lincoln’s dedication
to the memorial.
• It was a 2-minute speech about the state of the
Civil War.
• Here’s the audio of the speech read by Jeff
Daniels:
Election of 1864
• Lincoln got the Union soldier’s vote!
• He won 212/233 electoral votes (easy win).
• 3 months later…Congress passed the 13th
Amendment ending slavery for good.
Surrender at Appomattox
(April 1865)
• Confederate Army was down to 35,000.
• They surrendered in the small town of
Appomattox Court House, VA.
• Lee and Grant met:
1. Southern soldiers could go home.
2. They would not be charged with treason.
3. Grant would feed them.
Lincoln’s Assassination
(04/14/65)
• John Wilkes Booth was a great actor from
MD, but also a Southern sympathizer.
• 1st it was kidnap…then it was murder!
• Back of the head…Ford’s Theater in D.C.
