Instruments of the Band and Orchestra Brass Family Brass Family A brass instrument is a wind instrument made out of metal with a cup shaped mouthpiece connected to a tube ending with a flared bell. Devices used on modern brass instrument to play multiple notes are valves and slides. Brass instruments produce their sound by the vibration of the lips as the player blows into the mouthpiece. The faster the air, generally the higher the pitch. Trumpet The trumpet was first used by the ancient Egyptians for war. It first looked like a straight tube with a flared bell. Trumpet Modern day trumpets have 3 valves which allow them to play many more notes. Trumpets are used in the orchestra because of its diversity in sounds. It has both a piercing, brassy sound and a soft, muted sound. Its mouthpiece has a small, cupped shape. Trumpet Trumpet Family Trumpet Spotlight: Wynton Marsalis Wynton Learson Marsalis (b. October 18, 1961) is an American trumpeter and composer. He is among the most prominent jazz musicians of the modern era and is also a wellknown instrumentalist in classical music. Marsalis has made his reputation with a combination of skill in jazz performance and composition, a sophisticated yet earthy and hip personal style, an impressive knowledge of jazz and jazz history, and skill as a virtuoso classical trumpeter. As of 2006, he has made sixteen classical and more than thirty jazz recordings, has been awarded nine Grammys between the genres, and has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first time it has been awarded for a jazz recording. French Horn Gets its name from its greatly widened bell (cor de chasse). Placing the hand in the bell helps to support the horn. Like the trumpet, it has 3 valves. It has the smallest mouthpiece in the brass family. The mouthpiece flares out unlike the trumpet. French Horn Trombone The trombone was developed from the trumpet. The word trombone derives from Italian tromba (trumpet) and -one (a suffix meaning large), so a trombone is quite literally a "large trumpet". Trombone The trombone uses a slide to change the pitch of the sound. There are 7 slide positions. The mouthpiece is bigger than the trumpet and French horn. Trombone Trombone Spotlight: Cirrus Trombone Quartet The Cirrus Trombone Quartet is one of the newest component ensembles to emerge from within the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The quartet uses a bass trombone, tenor, and valve trombones. Baritone Baritones and euphoniums are small tubas with the sound range of a trombone. Baritones have 3 valves. There are concert baritones and marching baritones. Euphonium Euphoniums often have 4 or 5 valves (used mainly in concert bands/orchestras). Tuba The tuba is the bass instrument for the brass. It has the most tubing (16 ft.!!) of the brass instruments. It has 3 valves. It is usually played upright, with the bell facing the ceiling. Tuba Sousaphone Named after the famous American march composer John Phillip Sousa. A sousaphone is a valve brass instrument with the same tube length as other tubes. It is shaped differently so that the bell is above the head. It is primarily used in marching bands. Brass Instruments: Review Name these brass instruments:
