Who He Was • He was a German Composer and Pianist • He was a crucial figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic • Remains one of the most acclaimed and influential composers of all time. What You May Need to Know • Sonata: literally means a piece played • Quartet: a method of instrumentation used to perform a musical composition, and consisting of four parts. (four instruments) • Symphony: extended musical piece for orchestras. In his time his pieces and composition were hugely popular. • Today it can be argued that his music is even more popular. His pieces are used in cartoons and movies very often. Galileo Galilei • Birth: 15 February 1564, Pisa, Italy • Death:8 January 16 42 Arcetri, Italy • Causes of death were fever and heart palpitations. Who He Was • Galileo was an Philosopher, Physicist, Mathematician, and Astronomer. • He was a very important person whoc ontributed to the Scientific Revolution. • He attended the university of Pisa and Padua. • Views of the Universe Geocentric Model Heliocentric Model What He Did • Proved the Heliocentric Theory • Telescopic Observations • Improved the Scientific Method His Effect and What He Was Known For • Galileo was one of the key minds in the enlightenment. • He was the one who placed the final nail into the coffin of the geocentric theory. • His observations and calculations proved that earth revolved around the earth and not vice versa. • However his findings did not send the clergy alight with joy. Galileo’s Trial Due to the fact that his theories contradicted the church’s views Galileo was forced to sign a contract which stated that his theories were wrong ( they were true). After this Galileo spent the remainder of his life under house arrest. Sir Isaac Newton • Born: 4 January 1643 Lincolnshire, England • Death: 31 March 1727 Middlesex, England • Cause of Death: Old Age Who He Was • -A physicists and mathematician • Graduated From Trinity College, Cambridge, England. • He is considered the founder of modern day physics. • He also taught at Cambridge University. What He Is Known For • Three Laws of Motion – The law of inertia – The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object). – For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action. His effect on the Enlightenment • The began the science of physics. • All areas of mathematics were affected by his work. • His laws still stand to this day. • He explained supernatural phenomena using math and equations. Persecution • Newton often got into arguments with other scientists because his theories were very controversial. • The guy to the right is Leibniz( he tried to plagiarize some of Newton’s work.)
