Gallaudet University Protest In March 1988 the students protested the selection of another hearing president for Gallaudet University. They shut the school down until the Board of Trustees (school board) selected I. King Jordan as Gallaudet University's first deaf president. Heather Whitestone Heather Whitestone In 1995 she became the first deaf woman to win the crown of Miss America. Growing up she attended speech-only schools (oralism).
