PROTISTS DOMAIN KINGDOM PHYLUM CLASS ORDER FAMILY GENUS SPECIES Kingdom Protista Does your family have a drawer at home where you keep "stuff"? That drawer might include a flashlight, tape measure, spare keys, rubber bands, or extra stamps. These objects have little in common except that they are kept in the same drawer for convenience. Biologists have a sort of taxonomic "stuff" drawer: the kingdom Protista. Protista is a very diverse kingdom of organisms that do not fit neatly into any of the other kingdoms. Protist Characteristics Eukaryotic (have a nuclear membrane) Very diverse kingdom Most are unicellular Free-living (not parasites) Protist cells are the most complex cell – ** NOT specialized for 1 function** Kingdom Protista Grouping Protists by nutrition 3 Major categories: 1) animal-like (protozoans) 2) fungus-like 3) plant like = algae Grouping Protists by nutrition 1) animal-like (Protozoans) *heterotrophs: get energy & organic molecules by eating… bacteria other protists decaying matter * found mostly in aquatic environments * Grouped by motility Zooflagelletes Move by flagella Giardia Amoeba with Pseudopods Have pseudopods Amoeba Ciliated Paramecium Small hair-like cilia Paramecium Apicomplexans No movement (they are parasites) Plasmodium- causes malaria Grouping Protists by nutrition 3 Major categories: 2) fungus-like 3) plant like = algae Grouping Protists by nutrition 2) fungus-like heterotrophic…….get food & energy by decomposing DEAD organic matter NOT to be confused with fungi, though they are similar Grouping Protists by nutrition 2) fungus-like Major types: plasmodial slime molds water molds/ downy mildews Grouping Protists by nutrition 3 Major categories: 3) plant like = algae Grouping Protists by nutrition 3) plant like = algae autotrophs…….chloroplasts harness sunlight to make food (carbohydrates) unicellular, colonial, OR multicellular Grouping Protists by nutrition 3) plant like = make own food TYPES: euglenoids- flagella, chloroplast, eyespot, no cell wall - live in fresh water Grouping Protists by nutrition 3) plant like = make own food TYPES: Dinoflagellates- 2 flagella, spin, cell wall - plankton, red tide - bioluminescence Grouping Protists by nutrition 3) plant like = make own food TYPES: Diatoms- glass-like cell wall (silica) - chlorophyll - diatomaceous earth Grouping Protists by nutrition 3) plant like = make own food TYPES: Seaweed- large, multicellular marine algae - NOT plants (lack true roots, stems, leaves) - foods, used to thicken foods 1) BROWN ALGAE (kelp) 2) RED ALGAE 3) GREEN ALGAE
