Chapter 2 continued VI-The Puritans • A) Before 1517, There was only one Christian Church a person could join, The Roman Catholic Church. • What changed? • B) Martin Luther- A German monk becomes upset with the corruption of the Roman Catholic Church. • 1) He openly protests the Church and demands reform. • 2) Luther starts the PROTESTANT REFORMATION. • 3) This was the first time Christians not only protested against the Pope, but began to leave the Catholic Church • C) The Reformation starts the new Protestant Christian Church with no ties to Rome. • 1) England officially adopts the Protestant Church, but some think the reform is not extreme enough. • D) Puritans- a group of worshipers who felt that the new Protestant church was not “pure” enough. • 1) Fearing persecution, they decide to start their own church in the New World. 2) Persecution- pursue with harassing or oppressive treatment • E) 120 of these Puritan “Pilgrims” sail on the MAYFLOWER and land in Massachusetts. • 1) Pilgrim- a person who goes on a religious journey • 2) Like Jamestown, ½ of settlers die in the first winter. • 3) With the help of the local native tribe, the Puritans learn to adapt to their new environment. • 4) The colony grows and prospers • F) Many Puritans begin sailing for the New World. The MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY is formed. • 1) American folklore says the Pilgrims came here for religious freedom, but • 2) They only allowed settlers to worship God THEIR WAY. • 3)Anyone who spoke out against the Puritan Church was banished. • IS THIS RELIGIOUS FREEDOM?
