Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Types of Hearing Loss
Conductive: Having to do with the outer
ear, and middle ear functions. Wax,
tympanic membrane, or the ossicles
(bones)
Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Having to do
with the inner ear (cochlea)
Central Hearing Loss: NEW! Having to do
with the transmission from ear to brain
Degree of loss
 Normal 0-25dB
 Mild 26-40dB
 Moderate 41-70dB
 Severe 71-90dB
 Profound 91-110dB
A Hearing aid will
rarely
help a profound loss.
Speech Banana
Frequency
The higher the frequency the higher the
pitch
Examples:
 3000 Hz would be a bass violin in its lowest
key
500Hz would be a small girl squealing in her
highest voice
Sound Examples
Birds
Bats echo
Crocodile
Bass
Sample hearing Loss
Normal sloping to a severe loss in the high
frequencies. This is a bilateral loss.
Types of Amplification
Hearing Aids
BTE
ITE
ITC
Bone Conduction

Cochlear Implants
Baja
FM systems
