Eighteen states are considering measures banning the use of indoor
tanning devices for those under 18. Five more are weighing increased
regulation, such as requiring parental consent. Most states already
regulate teen tanning-bed use, by requiring parental consent. Ten states
limit tanning with age restrictions, ranging from 13 to 16.5. Only California
has a complete ban on indoor tanning for all minors. It took effect Jan. 1.
About 30 million people, including 2.3 million teens, use indoor tanning
devices each year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Indoor tanning is linked to increased risk of developing skin cancer,
including melanoma, the deadliest form. Effects are more severe for those
who tan at a young age. Opponents say the health benefits of ultraviolet
radiation — including the natural production of Vitamin D— outweigh the
risks.
Israel halted its airstrikes against Gaza Strip militants and rocket fire from
the Palestinian territory ebbed as a cease-fire ending four days of clashes
appeared to be taking effect. Both sides had indicated they have no
interest in seeing the fighting spiral into all-out war.
More than 8,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict, including

the U.N. General Assembly.
