THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM THINK Think about your skin. What is it made of? Whats it's function on the human body? Discuss this with a partner for 2 minutes. INTRODUCTION TO SKIN VOCAB Melanin Dermis Epidermis Sweat Gland/Oil Gland ( apocrine, eccrine, and sebaceous glands) Skin The Skin is an organ and is made of cells. An organ is classified as two or more layers of tissues. The skin is made up of two layers the epidermis and the dermis. Your skin loses 1 million skin cells every 40 minutes to prevent disease. It has glands that keep your skin cool and smooth. It also has special glands for your skin color. Skin Basically the skin is a sheet like structure that encloses our bodies. Our skin is like a natural shock absorber. Thousands of scrapes and bumps go unnoticed each day. Serious injuries to the skin happens in the inner layer. Your reaction is a quick “OUCH!” After the injury the dead skin cells replenish themselves. THE SKIN'S ANATOMY ANATOMY The first layer of skin is the epidermis the second layer is the dermis. The dermis is where the sweat glands are located. The hair root is also located in the dermis. The other sweat glands are located near the hair shaft Also located in the dermis are all of the skins nerves. As you can tell most of the skins anatomy is located in the dermis. OILED,COOL, AND MOISTENDED If it wasn't for all the oil and sweat glands our skin would be a piece of leather. Healthy skin is covered with a watery, greasy film. This film protects the skin against over wetting, over drying, overheating, and under cooling. The oil portion of the film is secreted by the sebaceous glands. The water portion is created in the apocrin and apocrin glands OILED,COOL, AND MOISTENDED Two of these glands are located near the hair shaft(apocrin and the eccrine) . The sweat gland is located in the dermis. The sebaceous gland produces the oil to keep your skin smooth. The sweat gland produces sweat to keep your self cool. You can sweat 8 quarts of sweat when exercising. Skin Color Ex. you left for summer vacation a month ago. When you returned your friends noticed your skin got darker. There was actually an entire process that made him darker. Melanin is a pigment Melanin is located deep in the cell layers. When your friend was exposed in the sun melanin absorbed the suns rays. Skin Problems When people have acne it could be for many reasons. It could be caused by dirt, contagion, or filthy living conditions not grease or candy. Acne is more frequent when puberty takes place. Another skin problem is Blisters. Blisters appear when the underlying layers become separated from the outer layer. Fluids fill the space in between. Boils are bacteria called Staphylococci. They establish themselves in the oil glands near the hair.
