Unit 2 We haven’t
found life on other planets yet.
Journey to space
Look at the picture and the title of the
unit. Think about things you know
about life on other planets.
We’ve been to the moon,
and there’s no life there.
Scientists think that there
has been life on Earth for
millions of years.
However, we haven’t
found life on other planets
yet. Why not ?
The Earth is a planet and it goes
around the sun. Eight other planets also
go around the Sun. None of them has an
environment with air, so people and
things cannot grow. The Sun and its
planets are called the solar system. The
solar system is a small part of our galaxy.
The stars we see at night are the suns in
other solar systems. There are more than
200 billion stars in our galaxy, called the
Milky Way, and our Sun is only one of them.
But scientists have
discovered many other
galaxies in the universe.
They are a long way and
their light has travelled
for many years to reach
us. It is hard to
understand how large
the universe is.
Scientists have sent
lots of spacecraft to
look at other planets in
our solar system, and
some spacecraft have
gone beyond the solar
system. However, no
one has discovered any
life in space yet.
But why has no one from other
planets sent us a message? Have they
tried to send information to us? With
so many stars in the universe, are we
alone, or is there life out there in space?
We don’t know … yet.

Important and difficult points
1. alone adj. & adv. without any other
people 独自(的);单独(的) lonely adj.
寂寞;孤独
e.g. The old man was alone in the house,
he felt very lonely .
这位老人一个人在屋里, 他感到非
常孤独。
She lives alone , but she doesn’t feel
lonely .
她独自住着, 但并不感到孤独 。
2. beyond prep. More than sth .超出;
除……之外
We have learned beyond 3,000 words.
我们已经学了3000多个单词.
3. no one 意思是 “没人”, 是两个单
词. no one=nobody,指人; 做主语时,
谓语动词只能用单数,不能用复数.
no one 后面不能接of.
e.g. No one told us about that关于那
件事没人告诉过我们.
none 也有 “没人” 之意,而且还
有 “ 没有物” 之意, 不过是指三人
或三人以上的人或物. 做主语时,其谓
遇动词用单复数都可以. none一般可
与
of
连用.
e.g. None of you haven’t finished the
work.
你们都没有完成这项工作.
5. so many 意思是“那么多的…”修饰
可数名词复数,经常与that 从句搭配,
构成“ so many +可数n.复数＋that…”
句型。
e.g. There are so many stars in the sky
that none can count out.
天空中这么多的星星,没有人数得清。
so much “那么多的…”修饰不可数名词。
e.g. He ate so much food that he
couldn’t stand up.
他吃了那么多食物以至于站不起
来了。
6. Scientists thinks that there has been
life on Earth for millions of years.
科学家认为地球上存在生命已经数
万年了。
精讲:that 引导的宾语从句
从句中there has been 是there be 结构
的现在完成时态。
millions of + (pl.) none
表示 “数百万计的…”
hundreds of, thousands of
e.g. There are hundreds of students in
our school.
Millions of stars are shining in the sky.
There are thousands of sheep on the hill.
7. The sun and its planets are called
the solar system.
太阳和它的行星被叫作太阳系.
精讲:本句中的are called 是被动语态.
被动语态的构成:be +过去分词.
e.g. The picture is drawn by him.
