The Neutrality Acts
•
Senator Gerald P. Nye (1892-1971). The American
response to this growing unrest in Europe was one of growing
isolationism, despite Roosevelt's attempts to participate in world events.
Senator Nye, a Republican from North Dakota, fed isolationist sentiment
in 1934 with a series of sensational Senate hearings attempting to link
American participation in World War I to the machinations of
international bankers and weapons manufacturers. Though it was not
proved that "war-mongering" by munitions manufacturers, and
extraordinary wartime profits, were the true causes of that war,
newspaper headlines kept isolationist sentiment alive.
• The result was the passage of a series of Neutrality Acts
between 1935 and 1937 that
1-forbade Americans to sell arms to warring countries,
2-to travel on belligerent ships, or
3-to carry on non-contraband trade in anything but cash sales
to nations willing to transport the goods themselves
