USI(Honors) - Syllabus and SG: Unit 5 – the American Civil War
For this unit it is HIGHLY recommended that you take a look at the "Farrand Notes" that I posted on the
website for your to access for lessons or concepts that you find difficult. I obviously can't lecture if I'm not
around, but you can still access them if you have difficulty. You can still ace the test without this step, but it is
there for you if you need it.
This syllabus is preliminary and dates (or assignments) can always change, but unless you hear otherwise you should complete the
relevant assignments by their due dates (regardless of whether you were reminded in class).

Short Essay: (2 will be on the test, answer 1 in less than a page – 10 points)
1. Describe how emancipation occurred and some of its important effects.
2. What was the overall Union strategy during the Civil War? Explain how it worked being sure to touch on
a non-Gettysburg battle as an example of the strategy at work.
3. Could the South have won the Civil War? Why or why not?
Essays- ONE of these topics will be on the test. Answer in a complete essay (20 points)
1. Was the Civil War inevitable? Or did it only occur because of the actions of radicals on both sides from
1850-1861?
2. In the winter of 1860 and the spring and summer of 1861 eleven southern states seceded from the
United States of America. Why did these Southern states decide to leave from the Union? Explain the
immediate causes of secession, from 1854 to 1861
