Biographic Sketch: Prof. Qiao joined the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science, RIT as an associate professor in August 2013. She leads the Advanced Optical Fabrication, Instrumentation & Metrology Laboratory where her team develops technologies such as ultrafast-lasers for advanced photonics fabrication and additive manufacturing, optical metrology, and phase imaging methods. Dr. Qiao has over 16 years of research experience spanning photonics, optics for imaging, and ultrafast laser systems and applications across academic and industrial settings. She has worked for two photonic startup companies (Radiant Photonics and LNL Technologies) and one optics company (Optikos) on various innovative photonics devices, optical imaging and metrology systems. Prior to joining RIT, she was a laser system scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (University of Rochester) from 2005 to 2013. She provided scientific and project leadership for the development of the OMEGA EP short-pulse laser system through developing new laser optics, imaging and diagnostics techniques and systems. She has conceived an interferometric grating-tiling technique and led the team that demonstrated the world’s first 1.5-meter tiled-grating pulse compressor. This has enabled the OMEGA EP laser to operate as the only kilojoule, picosecond Laser Users’ Facility since 2008. Dr. Qiao earned her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001. Her thesis was in the photonics area on dense wavelength division (de)multiplexing (WDM) for optical communications. She obtained her M.S. in Precision Instruments and Fine Mechanics from Tsinghua University in 1997. She has an M.B.A from the Simon Graduate School of Business (University of Rochester), concentrating in entrepreneurship, strategy, finance and marketing. Dr Qiao holds two US patents, has authored and presented over 50 scientific contributions in national and international journals and conferences. She has served on various technical committees for the Optical Society (OSA), was the program co-chair for the International Committee on Ultrahigh Intensity Lasers conference in 2014 and the conference co-chair for the 10th International Conference on Ultrafast Optics in 2015.
