SEER Data Cancer Project Brett Langsjoen SEER Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Purpose: Collect and publish cancer incidence and survival data from cancer registries that cover about 26% of the US population. Only comprehensive source of population-based information in the US that includes cancer at the time of diagnosis and patient survival data. http://seer.cancer.gov/ Purpose of SEER Collect data on cancers diagnosed among residents of geographic areas Report on the cancer burden relating to cancer incidence and mortality, and patient survival Identify unusual changes and differences in the patterns of occurrence of specific forms of cancer in population subgroups. Monitor occurrence of iatrogenic cancers, those caused by cancer treatment Collaboration with CDC National Program of Cancer Registries and National Program of Cancer Registries (NAACCR) A source for cancer research for NCI and general research community http://seer.cancer.gov/about/goals.html Cancer of the Urinary System Effected Organs Bladder Kidney Renal Pelvis Ureter Symptoms Hematuria (blood or blood clots in the urine) Dysuria (pain during urination) Higher chance of UTI (urinary tract infection) Pain in the lower back Weightloss Question What is the percentage of surviving patients with Cancer of the Urinary System over course of 84 months(7 years) after diagnosis? Observe the differences in this percentage related to Race and Gender. Results Points of significance Percentage of Black populations (Male and Female) surviving was consistently about 5% lower than all other races. Females generally had a lower percentage surviving than males (3%-5%) Percenage Surivival Over Time (Female) 95.00% 90.00% White Male 85.00% Male All Races 80.00% Black Male 75.00% Other Male 70.00% 0 12 24 36 48 60 72 84 96 Time (months) Percentage Surviving From Diagnosis Date Percentage Surviving From Diagnosis Date Percentage Survival Over Time (Male) 95.00% 90.00% White Female 85.00% All Races Female 80.00% Black Female 75.00% Other Female 70.00% 65.00% 0 12 24 36 48 60 72 84 96 Time(months) Questions?
