ROCKS!
DAILY LEARNING OBJECTIVE
SWBAT explain the formation of the 3 types of rocks by
reading articles and sharing the information with
partners
 LEQ: List and describe the 3 types of rocks, how they
are classified, and formed.

LET’S START TODAY WITH A LITTLE STORY…

Once upon a time, there was this volcano
who had hot magma churning deep inside. It
was making him sick, and so he threw up.
I don’t feel so
hot. I think I
need to vom.

As chunks of lava flew out, they cooled and
hardened. New rocks were born! One was
named Iggy.

As Iggy rolled down the mountain, little
bits of him started to come off. These little
bits were called sediments, and the little bits
were carried off by wind, water and other
natural forces.

“Oh no!” thought Iggy, “I will never see those
parts of me again!” And he was sad.

Little did Iggy know that the parts of him
that had broken off of him would enjoy a
cool journey. After being carried by wind and
water, they ended up in piles. After many
layers of piles, pressure built up and water
began to cement the sediments together
into sedimentary rock.

Some of the sedimentary rock at the very
bottom began to get squished by the
pressure from all the rock on top of it. As it
got pushed down further, it heated up and
began to bake! The rocks baked so much
that they became new rock called
metamorphic rock.
Is it hot in
here? I think I
am going to
bake!!

Some of the rock got so hot that it even
melted back into magma and traveled back
to the mantle. By this time, Iggy had also
melted. When Iggy saw that all of him had
melted and was now back together, he was
very excited. He just hoped the volcano
wouldn’t get sick again. THE END.
WHAT IS A ROCK?
A
naturally occurring solid mass of
minerals.
HOW ARE ROCKS CLASSIFIED?
Rocks are
classified
based on the
way that they
form.

ROCK TYPES JIGSAW

With your partner, number yourself either 1 or 2
 1: read about igneous rock
 2: read about sedimentary rock
 Both: read about metamorphic rock
 First,
read and annotate the article.

CORNELL NOTES!
WHAT IS AN IGNEOUS ROCK?
Are made from cooled-down lava
How do I know I am looking at an igneous rock?
1. Bubbles
2. Glassy appearance
3. Big grains of minerals

BUBBLES
GLASSY APPEARANCE
BIG GRAINS
WHAT IS A METAMORPHIC ROCK?
Made when a rock changes due to heat or
pressure
How do I know I am looking at a metamorphic
rock?
1. Bending layers
2. Squished Grains

BENDING LAYERS
SQUISHED GRAINS
WHAT IS A SEDIMENTARY ROCK?
Made of sediments (particles) that build up in
layers, usually at the bottom of a river or lake.
How do I know I am looking at a sedimentary
rock?
1. Flat layers
2. Mix of particle size

FLAT LAYERS

WHAT
TYPE
OF
ROCK?
What type
OF ROCK?
• This rock was formed by the
compaction and cementation of
sediment
• Sedimentary
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This rock was formed by melting
and cooling of magma.
• Igneous
What type of
rock?
• This rock was formed by heat and
pressure deep within the Earth.
• Metamorphic
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• Sedimentary
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• Igneous
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This type of rock is found near
volcanos.
• Igneous
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This type of rock is found deep
within the Earth.
• Metamorphic
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This type of rock is much like our
ice cream, it starts as a liquid and
then cools into a solid.
• Igneous
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This type of rock is much like our
sandwich. It is made of many
layers stacked on top of each
other.
• Sedimentary
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This type of rock is like our cake.
It is baked but not melted.
• Metamorphic
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• Conglomerate is an example of
this type of rock.
• Sedimentary
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This type of rock can be intrusive
or extrusive.
• Igneous
WHAT
TYPE
OF ROCK?
• This type of rock can be clastic or
chemical.
• Sedimentary
Summary
• Write a summary for today’s notes
(remember, your summary answers your LEQ)!
Independent Assignment
• Write a poem/rap/song about how the 3 types
of rocks are formed.
• You must include drawings for the
poem/rap/song.
Exit Ticket(on your warm up paper)!
1. What are the three types of rock called?
2. How are each of the three types of rock
created?
3. What are the two different types of igneous
rock?
4. What types of sedimentary rock did we
discuss, and how are they different from one
another?
