Metamorphic Rock Chapter 4 Section 4 Metamorphic Rock • Rock that has changed its form • Change is caused by heat and pressure • Changes can occur in the rock’s: - appearance - texture - crystal structure - mineral content Types of Metamorphic Rock Types are classified according to the arrangement of the grains Types of Metamorphic Rock • Foliated – contain layers or bands • Rocks split along bands Granite changes to Gneiss Shale changes to Slate Types of Metamorphic Rock • Nonfoliated – mineral grains are random – rocks do not split along bands Sandstone changes to Quartzite Limestone changes to Marble Uses • Marble and Slate are the most useful • Buildings • Statues • Walkways • blackboards
