Muscular System
Types of Muscle

Smooth – involuntary
 digestive


system and blood vessels
Cardiac – heart
Skeletal – voluntary
 Over
600 muscles in human body
 They work in pairs: one muscle moves the bone in
one direction and the other moves it back again

Muscle make up over half of body weight
Function of Skeletal Muscle
Support
 Allow bone movement
 Protects internal organs and stabilizes
joints
 Help maintain body temp

Skeletal Muscle






Every muscle is either a Flexor or an
Extender.
Flexors- Muscles that flex or bend a
joint.
Extenders- Muscles that extend or
straighten joints.
Origin- Where the muscle is anchored
to a bone to form a stationary
attachment.
Insertion- The point at which the
muscle is attached to a movable bone.
Belly – fleshy part of the muscle in
between the tendons that does the
actual contraction.
