Cardiovascular Disease
(CVD)
CVD affects the heart (cardio) and
blood vessels (vascular).
Lifestyle Disease vs. Contagious
Disease
 What is the difference between a
lifestyle disease & a contagious
disease?
 Give an example of each.
 List two ways that a lifestyle disease
be prevented?
Causes of Cardio Vascular Disease:







Heredity
Environment
High fat diets
Smoking
Lack of exercise
Stress
Obesity
Coronary arteries
 Supply
oxygen
rich blood
to the
heart
muscle
Diseases of the Arteries-Atherosclerosis
(ath·er·o·scle·ro·sis)
 When plaque
builds up in the
arteries
 Can result in
blocking the
blood flow to the
arteries
 Leads to
coronary artery
disease
Stroke
 Obesity and
smoking can lead
to a buildup of
deposits in your
arteries that form
a blood clot.
 If the clot is close
to your brain, it
can block the flow
of blood and
oxygen and cause
a stroke.
Diseases of the heart
 Angina Pectoris A pain or tightness in the
chest caused by lack of
oxygen to the heart
 Heart Attack The blood flow to a
section of heart muscle
becomes blocked. If the
flow of blood isn’t
restored quickly, the
section of heart muscle
becomes damaged from
lack of oxygen and
begins to die.
 Congestive Heart
failure Heart failure develops
over time as the
pumping of the heart
grows weaker. Problems
sending blood & oxygen
around the body. Heart
will increase in size.
Types of CVD-Hypertension
 Blood pressure
is the force of
the blood
pushing on the
arteries.
 High blood
pressure makes
the heart work
harder and the
strains the
walls of the
arteries.
Prevention





Avoid tobacco, alcohol & drugs
Eat a balanced diet
Maintain a healthy weight
Exercise
Manage stress
