Working with Integers
 What
are integers?
– Integers are made up of three groups of
numbers:
The
positive integers (+)
The negative integers (-)
zero
Working with Integers
 When
lives?
do we use integers in our daily
Multiplying and Dividing
 When
you multiply or divide two
positive values, the answer is always
POSITIVE.
(+)(+) = (+)
 When
you multiply or divide two
negative values, the answer is
always Positive.
(-)(-) = (-)
Multiplying and Dividing
 When
you multiply or divide a
positive value and negative value,
the answer is always NEGATIVE.
(+)(-) = (-)
Adding and Subtracting
 When
adding two positives, the
answer is always positive.
 When
adding two negatives, the
answer is always negative. (Just add
the two numbers, and put a negative
sign in front.)
Adding and Subtracting Adding and
Subtracting
 When
adding a positive and a
negative, the answer will be positive
if the largest number is positive, or it
will be negative if the largest number
is negative.
-23 + 13 = +/-??
23 + -13 = +/-??
Adding and Subtracting
 When
you are adding or subtracting
a negative, you will have two signs
beside each other. Circle them and
decide whether that means you add
or subtract.
4 + (-3) = ?? means 4 +/- 3 ???
4 – (-3) = ?? means 4 +/- 3 ???
Don’t forget…

When subtracting a negative, you change
the two negatives to a positive sign!!
15 – (-5) = 15 + 5 = ??

A helpful hint… If you have difficulties with
integers, think about the values as money
(negative: owing and positive: receiving)
Try these… Write an integer to
represent each description.

The opposite of 267.
One hundred seventeen feet above sea
level.
12 degrees below zero.
A pay cut of $6000.
Withdraw $983 from an ATM machine.
12 units to the left of -2 on a number
line.
A gain of ten pounds.
