First thing’s first… What is the definition of Mean Median Mode Range Mean Mean means average! Add a set of numbers and then divide by the amount of numbers in that set Median Medians in the middle! Put the set of numbers in numerical order and find the number in the middle of the set. Mode Mode is most! The number that appears the most often in a set of data Range Range is the difference! Take the smallest value in a set of data and subtract it from the largest value. Let’s try it out… Find the mean, median, mode, and range for 7, 12, 3, 6, 2, 12, 9, 17, 4 Mean: 7 + 12 + 3 + 6 + 2 + 12 + 9 + 17 + 4 = 72 72 ÷ 9 = 8 The mean of the set is 8. Find the mean, median, mode, and range for 7, 12, 3, 6, 2, 12, 9, 17, 4 Median: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 12, 12, 17 The media of the set is 7. Don’t forget to put the numbers in numerical order!! Find the mean, median, mode, and range for 7, 12, 3, 6, 2, 12, 9, 17, 4 Mode: 12 is the only number that appears more than once in this set. Therefore, the mode is 12. Find the mean, median, mode, and range for 7, 12, 3, 6, 2, 12, 9, 17, 4 Range: Ask yourself two questions 1.What is the largest number? 2.What is the smallest number? Subtract the smaller one from the larger one. 17 – 2 = 15 The range of this set is 15. Lets try another one… Find the mean, median, mode, & range 13, 13, 16, 2, 4, 8, 12, 15, 1, 10 13, 13, 16, 2, 4, 8, 12, 15, 1, 10 Mean: 9.4 13 + 13 + 16 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 12 + 15 + 1 + 10 = 94 94 ÷ 10 = 9.4 Median: There are two numbers in the middle! Now what?? Take the numbers and average them. 10 + 13 = 23 23 ÷ 2 = 11.5 13, 13, 16, 2, 4, 8, 12, 15, 1, 10 Mode: 13 It is okay to have more than one mode if multiple numbers appear more than once. Range: 14 A song to help remember http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uydzT_WiRz4 Gummy Bears Let’s find the mean, median, and mode for your team’s bag of gummy bears. Collect your data! Red White Orange Yellow Green Mean What would guess the mean color of gummy bears in your bag is? Now find the actual mean. Count the number of bears of each color to calculate the average. Median Put your numbers in order to find the median of gummy bear colors Mode What color do think appears most often? Find the actual mode. Remember! Mode is the number that appears most often. Range What is the range of the number set you created using the gummy bears? Largest number – smaller number = range
