Addition Parents How would you solve this problem? 58 + 7 Addition by Bridging 15 + 7 +2 +5 15 20 22 Addition by Partitioning 35 + 23 = 50 + 8 = 58 35 + 23 30 + 20 5+3 50 8 Subtraction Parents How would you solve these? 24 – 6 37 – 11 64 – 59 37 – 9 Subtraction by Bridging 15 - 7 -2 8 -5 10 15 Subtraction by Adjusting 28 - 11 -1 17 - 10 18 28 Subtraction by Adjusting 28 - 9 - 10 +1 18 19 28 Finding the Difference 12 – 9 Children need to know that subtraction is the inverse of addition What number sentences could we write with these numbers? 6 3 9 Missing Numbers 12 - =9 8+ = 11 +3 -4 = 10 =5 Solving Problems There are 14 people on a bus. At the next stop, 5 people get off. How many people are left on the bus? In Mrs Brown’s class there are 14 girls and 15 boys. How many children are there altogether? How you can help at home Ask your child to show you what they have been doing in maths lessons and what methods they are learning. Practise number bonds – not just to 10, but pairs of numbers to make 9, 8, 7, etc. Use real life opportunities to practise maths skills, e.g. at the shops.
