Algebra 1.2 I can evaluate expressions using order of operations. Warm-Up Make the number 8 by using each of the four numbers exactly once along with any operation and grouping symbol. 2, 3, 4, 8 Order of Operations The ORDER OF OPERATIONS establishes the necessary rules so that expressions are evaluated in a consistent way by everyone. With your team discuss the order in which an expression is to be evaluated. Example 1 Evaluate the expression Circle the terms Simplify each term until it is one number. Add the terms going from left to right. Hot Potato~(Round Table) Every team has one sheet of paper and each student has a different colored pencil. A problem is given to the group. Person 1 writes the first step of the solution process, explaining aloud, and passes the paper on to Person 2. Person 2 makes any corrections and adds the next step, explaining aloud, and passes the paper on. Process continues until the problem is competed. Hot Potato Team Strategy Evaluate the expression Ex2: 21 ÷ 3 + (5-2) - 42 Ex3: Ex4: Ex5: 32 + 2 – 7 5●2 2[5 + (30 ÷ 6+4 2 3 ●4 2 6) ] Evaluate the Algebraic Expression Team Challenge Questions Write a numerical expression involving division in which the first step in evaluating the expression is addition. Discuss why addition rather than division is the first step. Choose three numbers from 1 to 6. Using each of the numbers exactly once in each expression, write five expressions that have different results when they are evaluated. Justify your choices. Algebra 1.2 Work must be shown!
