Proper and Improper Fractions Section 3.1 Objectives • Write a fraction to describe the parts of a unit • Select proper or improper fractions from a list of fractions • Change improper fractions to mixed numbers • Change mixed numbers to improper fractions Objective 1: Write a fraction to describe the parts of a unit Objective 1 • Fraction is a name for a number • Upper numeral is the numerator • Lower numeral is the denominator Objective 2: Select proper or improper fractions from a list of fractions Objective 2 • Proper fraction – numerator is less than the denominator • Improper fraction – numerator is greater than or equal to denominator Objective 3: Change improper fractions to mixed numbers Objective 3 • Mixed number – sum of a whole number and a fraction with addition sign omitted (fraction part is usually a proper fraction) • To change an improper fraction to a mixed number – Divide the numerator by the denominator – The quotient is the whole number part – The remainder, if there is one, is the new numerator (Keep the denominator the same) Objective 4: Change mixed numbers to improper fractions Objective 4 • Multiply the denominator times the whole number • Add the numerator to the product from step one • Write the sum from step two over the denominator (keep the same denominator)
