TRANSITIONS
STRATEGIES
Tara Tiller came to Fentress Co. May 11, 2011 and
shared math strategies.
Our administration team, instructional coaches and
teachers attended the MODEL SCHOOLS conference
June 26 -30, 2011 where we participated in various
sessions and gathered this information.
TRANSITIONAL IDEAS
K-2 grades (line up using these)
Count out loud (whisper count by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s, 2’s, 3’s, etc.)
Ordinal Numbers (line up by these and then whisper count up to assigned #)
Even, Odd (have odd or even line up then count by …1,3,5,7,9
and look for patterns – the one in 11, 21, 31, etc.)
Days of the Week, shape and number identification
Ten Less ( give a number, they tell the # that is ten less, ten more)
Addition/Subtraction facts
3-5 grades
Addition/Subtraction facts
Multiplication/Division facts
Locate and identify line relationships
Angles, geometry, etc.
6-8 grades
Divisibility Patterns (ends in even number means divisible by 2)
Review Formulas (geometric shapes, etc.)
Apply to Real Life (slope, gallons, geometry, meters, etc.)
Examples of these are available for you
•Spiraling (Bell Ringers/Homework) past, present, future
•Numbers of the Day
Ex. 3, 7 are the numbers for today:
K-2 makes groups for the individual digits
3-8 multiplication, fractions, mixed numbers, etc.
•Answer a problem in 10 different ways to prove
if it is correct/wrong
•Fist on chest (closed fist = working on a strategy,
1 finger from fist = 1 strategy,
2 fingers from fist = 2 strategies
