Review Last Night’s Homework
• Helping verbs
What does it do:
It is a word that describes a noun or
pronoun.
Adjectives slightly change the meanings of
these words.
For example:
A house could become a small house or a
large, wooden house
What Kind?
new car
striped tie
Which One?
this swan
every page
How Many?
one hamburger
many geese
How Much?
no food
little rain
When adjectives modify nouns, they usually
come directly before the nouns. However,
sometimes they may come after.
Examples: She saw a bright, smiling face.
The room, narrow and dark,
frightened us.
Adjectives usually come after a linking verb when
they modify pronouns. However, sometimes they
may come before.
Examples: They are happy and talkative.
Quiet and sullen, he sat in a
corner.
What word do these adjectives
modify or describe?
1. Ducks, geese, and swans are aquatic birds.
2. All waterfowl swim and float.
3. These birds have webbed feet.
Three common adjectives – the, a, and an – are
known as articles. Articles ALWAYS come
before the nouns they modify. They answer the
question – Which one?
Examples: the canoe
the swan
a pond
an old sweater
Nouns can sometimes be used as adjectives. A noun
used as an adjective usually comes directly before
another noun and answers the question What kind?
or Which one?
Examples:
Noun – shoe
Used as Adjective: a shoe salesperson
(What kind?)
Find the noun being used as an
adjective…
1. As with other members of the waterfowl family,
geese gather in large flocks each autumn.
2. They travel long distances to spend the
winter season in warm climates.
3. While migrating, geese often fly in a wedge
formation.
A proper adjective is a proper noun used as
an adjective or an adjective formed from a
proper noun.
Examples:
Truman - the Truman library
Florida - the Florida wetlands
American – American history
Find the Proper Adjectives:
1. Snow geese live in the Arctic region
surround the North Pole.
2. Some spend winters along the Atlantic
coast.
3. The Canada goose is another popular
North American bird.
4. It usually lays its eggs during warm
March or April days.
Compound Adjectives
• Compound adjectives are made up of more
than one word.
• Examples: a well-known actress, a
freshwater lake
Identifying Adjectives and the
Words they Modify
1. A play is a live performance before
a real-life audience.
2. The script is the written text that
the actors memorize.
3. The director of a Broadway play
has a difficult job.
4. The first task of the director is to
select the actors for each part.
Exit Ticket

adjectives (noun acting as adj.; proper adj., article,
or compound adj.)
The (1) Beatles consisted of four (2)
musicians in their twenties. Because they (3)
were quite poor, they struggled (4) at first.
They could not afford music (5) lessons, so they
taught themselves to play and sing. They had
been (6) playing together for several years (7)
before they had their first hit record. They
