The Last Olympian By: Rick Riordan Copyright : Rick Riordan 2009 Genre: Greek mythology By : Shane Wyman Interest Level and Reading Level: the interest level and reading level of “The Last Olympian” is 4th grade – 11th grade. Main Theme The main theme of this book is Rick's view of Greek mythology. Rick gathers up all the Greek Mythology he can find and once he is done he gets a pad of paper and pencil and starts up a brain storm. In his books he puts Greek monsters like....hell hounds, emporias, furies, monitors, Hades' dead army, and other monsters. He also put his own twist on things like historic people as kids of gods. Examples: George Washington was a son of Heroms, Harriet Tub man was a daughter of Heroms, and Abraham Lincoln as a son of Athena. He also puts real Greek worriers as in Precious, Hercules, and the Titans. Rick takes real facts then twists them into his own view in the Percy Jackson series. Overview The Last Olympian is about Percy and all of his friends who have to save the world by going to the underworld and swimming in the River of the Styx. They destroy the dead army of Hades by Percy's new power from the Styx. Next they have to go to New York City and defeat the Titan lord Kronos. Kronos finds away up to the top of the Empire State Building where Olympus is magically hidden. Kronos is trying to destroy the center of the gods power, the thrown. If Kronos is able to destroy the thrown of one god that god will turn to dust. Percy gives Kronos a cursed blade that makes him stab himself in his Achilles heel from the River of the Styx. Percy is able to save the day. problem & solution The problem in The Last Olympian is the giant war between the Titans and the gods. The Titans are winning from all the betrayals of the Demigods and joining the Titan lords' army. Kronos in Luke’s body kept tricking Demigods into joining their side. They had a spy at camp half-blood and kept giving the important information to Kronos. The spy told the enemy army to send the worst monster to kill every one and they almost succeeded. Luke overcame Kronos' soul in his body and turned Kronos to dust, thus wining the war. Setting and Point of View The setting of this book starts at Percy's home then moves to his friends' house. Then the setting changes to Olympus on the 600th floor of the Empire State Building. Next we go Percy's home which is in New York. Afterward we move to camp half-blood which is hidden in a forest near a New York highway, that only can be accessed by gods and other half-bloods. The ending of this book is set in Olympus. I believe Rick Roirdan used the battle as a lesson of team work and trust. Percy went into battle with all of his friends with only trust, friendship and blessings from the gods and their mortal parents. This showed if you went into battle you would have to have a lot of trust in your allies, or teammates. Percy could have been betrayed and found out he had a new enemy which was just using him for information. One of his friends, Annabeth took a few hits from the Titans for Percy. Percy knew he was able to trust her because of this. The Last Olympian was a story of built around trust and teamwork. Characters The Character of this book are from Greek Mythology that have some pretty cool features with a modern twist. There were many characters but I want to show you the main characters that were throughout this book. The main character of this book is Percy Jackson. Percy is the son of Poseidon. He is one of the saviors of Olympus like his brother, Tyson and Annabeth. He is one of the children of the big three that are some of the most powerful of all the gods. Tyson is Percy's brother, who is a Cyclopes. He is about 7 ft tall and stronger than a wrestler by about 10 times. He can wield metal into a sword in about 20 seconds. He helped Percy by using his strength and fighting Percy's battles. He was Percy's protector. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena, a Greek god. She is 15 years old with blond hair and gray eyes like her mother. She is a skilled fighter, who uses only a knife to fight monsters. She also dreams of being an architect. Annabeth helps Tyson protect Percy from monsters. Percy and Annabeth are best friends because she was always there for him and he could trust her. Poseidon is the god of the sea and he is also Percy's dad. Poseidon in his mortal form is about 6 ft.2. He is always wearing a coastline shirt and a bathing suit bottom. He has a short haircut the color of hazel. Poseidon helps Percy in the book by taking down a evil dragon that could take down the empire state building in one blow. Zeus is Poseidon’s brother making him Percy's uncle. Zeus is the same height as his brother Poseidon in mortal form. Zeus has a long gray beard and most of the time a scowl on his face. He always wears a gray and black suit. He helped Percy by fighting the huge dragon and buying Percy and Percy's dad some time. Don't get these Greek characters mixed with the old Greek characters because these guys have a modern twist. Discussion Questions Chapter Fifteen What is the fate of Grover's Searches' license?
