•The Buddha was born on a full-moon day in the month of May (Visakha) 2600 years ago. •His birth took place in a town called Lumbini, in India, near Nepal Buddha was born a prince. When the king saw him he felt as if all his wishes had been fulfilled and he named the young prince “Siddhartha.” The King invited a prophet to make predictions about the prince’s future. The prophet told the king..... “There are signs that the boy could become either a ruler of the entire world, or a fully enlightened Buddha. “ [Buddha means ‘enlightened one’ ] The King did not want his son to see suffering {or be a Buddha] so he decided Siddartha should live a life of luxury hidden away from the real world. He had everything he could ever want and at an early age married a beautiful princess Yasodhara. Despite the King’s attempts to protect Siddartha from the real world the prince was not happy living like a prisoner. One day he went out hunting and he saw FOUR sights. Old age Sickness Death A holy man Each of the four sights made Prince Siddartha sad, and made him think about life. He decided that he must leave home in a quest for enlightenment. It was tough for him to leave his family but he thought he was doing it for the best The Prince then lived as a Holy man. He had no money, clothes or luxury. He ate very little and was near to death when he realised this was NOT the answer. He gave it up and decided a middle way was better between extreme luxury and extreme poverty. He sat himself under a Bodhi tree and meditated, determined to find the truth. Then gradually as morning came he saw things in a new way, he became enlightened ............ the Buddha He decided to share his teachings and ideas. Buddhism is 2,600 years old There are currently 376 million followers worldwide There are around 151, 816 Buddhists in Britain Buddhism is a result of Prince Siddhartha’s quest for Enlightenment in around the 6th Century BC There is no belief in a personal God. Buddhists believe that nothing is fixed or permanent - change is always possible Buddhists can worship both at home or at a temple The path to Enlightenment is through the practice of morality, meditation and wisdom. Buddhism • We have learnt that Buddhists follow the teachings of one man who lived a long time ago. • They do not believe in God but that you should live a thoughtful life. • They believe that life is to be enjoyed.
