Do Now: Open or Closed Door Policy?
• Mr. Booms recently moved to a new neighborhood. He is
debating whether to have an open-door policy or a closeddoor policy toward his neighbors.
• If he has an open-door policy, he will invite the neighbors to
parties, ask for and perform favors for them, and borrow from
and lend things to them. If he has a closed-door policy, he
won’t do any of these things.
• Complete the T-chart below.

Step 3: What would you do!?
• If you had been China’s emperor during the
Tang Dynasty, to what extent would you have
welcomed or rejected foreign contact?
Step 4: What happened at the end of
the Tang Dynasty?
Buddhist
monasteries became very
wealthy. Some people, it
was said, became monks
just to avoid paying taxes. In
addition, influential Chinese
began attacking Buddhism
as a foreign religion.
Step 4: What happened at the
end of the Tang Dynasty?
In 843, the Tang
government, which needed
money, began seizing property.
Thousands of Buddhist monks and
nuns were forced to give up their
way of life. Monasteries and
statues were destroyed. Precious
metals were melted down and
turned over to the royal treasury.
The persecution of Buddhists
lasted only a few years, but it
greatly weakened the power of
the monasteries.
How has each religion been
persecuted?

Buddhism is no more than a cult of barbarian peoples…
The Buddha was a man of the barbarians who did not
speak the language of China and wore the clothes of a
different fashion… How then, when he has long been
dead, could his rotten bones, the foul and unlucky remains
of his body, be rightly admitted to the palace?...Your
servant is deeply shamed and begs that this bone be given
to the proper authorities to be cast into the fire and water,
that this evil may be rooted out.
