By: Sean Bonner HAWAIIAN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK Map of Hawaiian volcanoes When Hawaiian Volcanoes became a national park Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park was established in 1840. It was founded to teach people around the country about volcanoes. How the park formed The pacific tectonic plate many years ago crossed over a hot spot. The lava seeped out and cooled, forming the islands of Hawaii. They are still growing today. Types of rocks The two main rocks in Hawaiian National Park are volcanic rocks including obsidian and pumice. pumice obsidian Special landforms/features Kilauea caldera 1790 footprints How the park is changing The park is still changing today. The volcanoes erupt; the lava dries and creates new land. Environmental issues Hawaiian National Park has a beautiful forest, but it is being invaded by nonnative plant and animal spicies. This is fountain grass, an invading plant to the park. How technology is used Scientists use tools like seismographs to detect earthquakes, which helps studies with the volcanic activity.
