Chapter 6 Landforms in Ch. 6, Section 1: plains, coastal plains plateaus mountains (4 types) Other Landforms on Web Quest / Various Sources: islands caves valleys cliffs canyons mesas, buttes geysers 1. The flat land of plains is ideal for _______________. Plains & Plateaus 2. When plains are found near the ocean, they’re called ____________ _______________. Look on page 154 in your textbook. 3. A coastal plain is often called a ______________ because it is lower elevation than thein land around it. Play “factinfinders” to fill these blanks. 4. Another way to describe elevation is the ____________ above _____ level. 5. You can think of a coastal plain as being the ___________ portion of a continental _________. 6. The continental shelf is a part of a continent that _______ into the ocean. 7. Coastal plains form when sediment____________ on the ocean floor. 8. Coastal plains, such as the Atlantic Coastal Plain, have low _______________ hills, swamps and ____________. Mountains The highest mountain in the world is Mt. Everest in the Himalaya. The peak is more than 8,800 meters above sea level. There are 4 types of mountains: 1 – folded mountains 2- upwarped mountains 3 – fault-block mountains 4 – volcanic mountains Examples are the Rocky Mountains in Canada & the Appalachian Mountains Folded rock layers look like a rug pushed against a wall. Remember the paper with your hands on the left and right side. Folded Mountains Form when blocks of Earth’s crust are pushed up by forces inside Earth An example is the Adirondack Mts in New York & the southern Rocky mountains in Colorado Think of these mountains as the ones with sharp, jagged peaks. Upwarped Mountains Huge, tilted blocks of rock separate from surrounding rocks by faults The faults are like large cracks or fractures The Grand Tetons in Wyoming are an example of fault-block mountains; also the Sierra Nevadas in CA This process of mountain building produces majestic peaks & steep slopes Fault-block Mountains Begin to form when molten material reaches the surface through a weak area of the crust Two examples are Mount St. Helens in Washington and Mt. Shasta in California Volcanic Mountains Section 1 Vocabulary Words • • • • • • plains plateau folded mountain upwarped mountain fault-block mountain volcanic mountain Copy this concept map on PAGE 19 in your Science journals. Use section 1 of chapter 6 (pages 154-159) to fill in the missing words. Web Quest Project The web quest answer sheet is due Friday, Sept. 21. The answers can be found on the following web site: http://www.mcwdn.org/MAPS&GLOBES/Landforms.html Graphics All images on slides 1-9 are courtesy of Glencoe Science, Earth Science textbook Other Landforms Geysers • The most famous geyser in the world is probably Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. It was discovered in 1870 by the Washburn Expedition, whose members stumbled upon the geyser during an eruption. One can imagine what it must have been like for those early explorers to see Old Faithful in all its glory. Even today, seeing Old Faithful erupt is an unforgettable experience. • On average, Old Faithful erupts about every 92 minutes, and shoots water 135 feet into the air, but has been known to erupt as high as 190 feet. Can you classify these landforms? Canyon Plateau Valley
