Are Students Guiding Your Lesson Plans ? I can relate . . . • In 10 years teaching I have been in . . . –6 different schools –8 different grade levels – Taught 19 different subjects (among various grade levels) I HAVE BEEN IN YOUR SHOES!!!!!!! There are always choices . . . • • • • The union debate The summers off debate The contract debate The urban schools debate The list goes on and on. How will you define yourself as an educator? Life is what you make it. • I have had the opportunity to attend PD for many different subjects and topics. • I have been able to establish a large “bank” of strategies to apply in many different situations. • I have created several curriculum plans which has given me my lots of opportunity to “fine tune.” • I have established myself and my practices based on LOTS of information. Try to fill in the blanks: The questions that p_______ face as they raise ch_______ from in_______ to adult life are not easy to an_______. Both fa_______ and m_______ can become concerned when health problems such as co_______ arise any time after the e_______ stage to later life. Experts recommend that young ch_______ should have plenty of s_______ and nutritious food for healthy growth. B_______ and g_______ should not share the same b_______ or even sleep in the same r_______. They may be afraid of the d_______. How did you do? Why? • The questions that poultrymen face as they raise chickens from incubation to adult life are not easy to answer. Both farmers and merchants can become concerned when health problems such as coccidiosis arise any time after the egg stage to later life. Experts recommend that young chicks should have plenty of sunshine and nutritious food for healthy growth. Banties and geese should not share the same barnyard or even sleep in the same roost. They may be afraid of the dark. Do you know who your audience is? • Did you know that Jasmine just broke up with Jason? • Did you know that Samantha woke up extra early so that she could help get all of her siblings ready and off to school, which made her late and without her own supplies and breakfast? • Did you know Johnathon’s dad just got arrested last night? IT IS NOT FICTION, IT IS LIFE. To trick or not to trick? • What is the essential job of a GOOD educator? To trick or not to trick? • It is our job to MEET students where they ARE and GIVE them the tools they need to be successful. Successful learning opportunities. What does this slide tell you? Anything? How do I increase the amount of learning happening in my classroom? • Visuals, Visuals, Visuals • Give students what they need. • Force students to manipulate content. • Give lots of opportunity for peer collaboration. • BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING! How do I begin? How can I best use my textbooks? Do you know where textbooks are printed? What does this mean for us as educators? Text books are your best REFERENCE TOOL Create your learning targets. Pacing Guide: Convection Currents in the Mantle Cause the Crust to Move. What LEARNINGS TARGETS (scaffolding) do I need to create for students to understand this BIG IDEA? Create your learning targets. Pacing Guide: Convection Currents in the Mantle Cause the Crust to Move. I can describe the interior structure of Earth. I can illustrate the layers of earth. I can compare the convection in a pot of boiling water to that in the Earths mantle. I can design a model showing the movement of tectonic plates. This is where Bloom’s fits in: Pacing Guide: Convection Currents in the Mantle Cause the Crust to Move. I can describe the interior structure of Earth. I can illustrate the layers of earth. One way to use Bloom’s Taxonomy in your planning: • Take the 3 sheets of blank copy paper to create a layered book. Label each tab with the Bloom’s Taxomony Levels: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, Creating Now its your turn . . . • Take out the Learning Target Worksheet, or use your layered book and begin jotting down ideas on a content standard you will be teaching in the near future. • Be sure to: – Scaffold – Allow opportunity for content manipulation – Create Graphic Organizers/Visual Representations – Create opportunity for student collaboration • Please feel free to share ideas with each other and to ask me questions. Now its your turn . . . –WRITE CHAT ACTIVITY • USE LARGE CHART PAPER • ABSOLUTELY NO VERBAL COMMUNICATION • Please write the following question in the center of your paper: • WHY DO WE ASSESS AND WHAT IS THE BEST WAY?
