Some Notes:
*First church Schism: The Great Schism of 1054 between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman
Catholic Church. There were a number of other smaller schisms in the Catholic Church that eventually
led to the Protestant Reformation. One reason the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox churches
split in 1054 (The Great Schism) was due to a conflict of deciding which city, Rome or Constantinople,
had the legitimate Pope at the time.
*Christians believe Jesus is God but Jewish people believe Jesus is a prophet and God has yet to come.
*Protestant Reformation: Began with Martin Luther posting 95 theses (objections or “protests” to
Church doctrine and practice of the time) on the doors of Wittenberg church in Germany in 1517.
Eventually the first Protestant church, Lutheran, was formed.
*Counter Reformation: The Catholic church eventually responds to many of Luther’s and other
reformers objections beginning in 1545 with the Council of Trent, but it is too late to unite the western
Christian denominations back with Rome.
*Monotheist Religions (One God: actually the SAME God): Islam, Judaism, Christianity
*Polytheist (Many gods): Hinduism
*Search for enlightenment: Buddhism (Pantheism kinda/sorta)
*New Age; Pantheism (All are part of one god: all life is united in its “godness’)
